Canadian Prairie growing conditions: canola crop tour observations
The Boreal originations team completed a five-day crop tour across Saskatchewan and Alberta in the first week of June. Below are the key observations for the 2026/27 canola crop.
Emergence and stand establishment
Stand establishment was generally good across the southern Prairie, with plant populations averaging 6–8 plants per square foot. Northern Alberta was more variable due to a dry May.
Soil moisture profile
Sub-soil moisture is adequate to good across most of the growing region. Recent rainfall in the second week of June was well-timed for early flowering.
Yield outlook
Our field-level yield estimate is 40.8 bu/ac at the national level, roughly in line with the five-year trend. Total production of 19.8 million mt would be supportive of steady export loadings through the 2026/27 marketing year.
Canadian canola supply looks constructive for destination buyers. Boreal is actively booking Nov/Dec/Jan positions ex-Vancouver for Central Asian delivery.
